Last victim of Phu Quoc canoe capsize accident transferred to Cho Ray Hospital

Before approving the transfer, specialists from Cho Ray Hospital worked closely with local doctors to assess the patient's condition.

An Giang (VNA) – The last seriously injured victim of the deadly canoe capsize off Phu Quoc Island was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on July 13 for further treatment.

The emergency transfer was carried out through close coordination between authorities of Phu Quoc special zone in An Giang province and Cho Ray Hospital to give the patient the best chance of recovery.

To ensure the patient's safety during the flight, a special medical transport plan was put in place. Procedures at Phu Quoc International Airport were expedited, while the airline arranged a dedicated area on the aircraft equipped with advanced life-support equipment. A team of doctors accompanied the patient throughout the journey to monitor the condition and respond to any emergency.

Before approving the transfer, specialists from Cho Ray Hospital worked closely with local doctors to assess the patient's condition. They also performed a complex coronary intervention lasting more than two hours, successfully inserting two stents to restore blood flow in severely damaged coronary arteries. The patient's vital signs stabilised after the procedure, making air transport possible.

The patient will continue receiving intensive care at Cho Ray Hospital, one of Vietnam's leading medical centres.

The canoe carrying 36 people, including 32 tourists, three crew members and a tour guide, capsized about 400 metres off the coast of Phu Quoc on July 11 while travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port. The accident left 15 Indian tourists dead./.

In the coming days, the MoFA will continue to work closely with the An Giang provincial People’s Committee, the Phu Quoc Special Zone, relevant agencies, the Vietnamese Embassy in India, the Embassy of India in Hanoi and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City to closely monitor the situation, carry out consular and citizen protection work, and repatriate the bodies of the deceased tourists to India in accordance with the wishes of their families as soon as possible.

Ministry orders tighter ferry safety after Phu Quoc boat capsize

The Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration, Vietnam Register, and provincial construction department were instructed to coordinate with the Border Guard, Coast Guard, public security and local authorities to determine the cause of the accident, deal with its aftermath, identify and fix any state management lapses, offer support to victims and their families, and report regularly on the investigation’s progress.

According to the document, at around 13:00 on July 11, an especially serious waterway traffic accident occurred about 200 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. Passenger canoe AG-26751, carrying 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, capsized while travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port, claiming 15 lives as of 15:00 the same day.

Search and rescue underway after tourist speedboat capsizes off Phu Quoc

According to the local authorities, the canoe operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company was transporting 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, including one captain, one mechanic, and one staff member, capsized while en route from May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port amid strong wave and wind condition. As a result, by 15:00 on July 11, the accident had claimed 15 lives.
