Philippines sends thousands of students home after school attack warnings

Hanoi (VNA) – Students at 20 schools in San Antonio, a town in Zambales province of the Philippines, were sent home on August 24 morning after local authorities received a warning about a potential attack on the schools.

San Antonio Mayor Arvin Antipolo suspended classes at the 20 schools, notified the police, and established a command centre at City Hall to monitor the situation. Sending students home was a precautionary measure.

The warning, issued by a self-proclaimed informant, indicated that unidentified individuals planned to attack the schools. Authorities are investigating the reliability of the warning and have not yet identified any suspects. Security measures are being maintained in the area, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

This move comes as the Philippines is stepping up school safety measures following last week's school shooting in Zamboanga city, which left two students dead and several others injured. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an investigation into the incident and strengthened school safety measures./.
