Thailand’s southern province imposes curfew after dozens of arson attacks

The Narathiwat Task Force announced a province-wide curfew from 10:15pm on August 22 to 6am on August 23. Residents were only allowed to leave their residences in emergencies and were required to obtain permission from the military, police or local authorities.

Hanoi (VNA) – Authorities in Narathiwat province imposed a curfew across the province on the evening of August 22 after a series of arson attacks and explosions occurred in the province and two other southern Thai provinces, Yala and Pattani, injuring at least two people.

The Narathiwat Task Force announced a province-wide curfew from 10:15pm on August 22 to 6am on August 23. Residents were only allowed to leave their residences in emergencies and were required to obtain permission from the military, police or local authorities.

According to local media, the arson attacks began at around 8pm. In Narathiwat province, at least 11 incidents were recorded, including arson attacks targeting administrative offices, the burning of tyres, and vandalism of power poles and convenience stores. An explosion involving a car injured two people.

The Thai military warned citizens to remain vigilant following the incidents. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and determining whether there were any further casualties, while investigating the incidents to establish the full sequence of events and identify those responsible./.
