Cambodia opens market to Israeli citrus fruit

Israel's Citrus Growers Association estimates the Cambodian market could absorb around 10,000 tonnes of Israeli citrus per year.

Tel Aviv (VNA) – Cambodia has approved imports of Israeli citrus fruit, beginning in the coming season, following the completion of a professional approval process between Israel's Plant Protection and Inspection Services and Cambodian authorities.

The clearance covers oranges, clementines, lemons, grapefruit and pomelos.

Israel's Citrus Growers Association estimates the Cambodian market could absorb around 10,000 tonnes of Israeli citrus per year.

Oren Lavi, director-general of Israel's Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, said the approval is part of a wider push to strengthen Israeli farmers' position in overseas markets.

He sai the ministry is working to open new markets and remove export barriers. More markets for Israeli farmers mean stronger local agriculture, increased production and supply, and more competitive prices in Israel as well.

The Cambodia agreement fits into a broader Far East export strategy that includes government support for Israeli exporters at international trade fairs. This year, the ministry worked with the Israel Export Institute to support Israeli participation in Asia Fruit Logistica, one of Asia's leading exhibitions for fresh produce.

In parallel, as part of an agricultural cooperation framework with Japan, the ministry is working to secure Japanese market access for additional Israeli produce, including watermelons, melons and other gourds./.
