Jakarta (VNA) – The second ASEAN Think Tanks Summit (ATTS) opened in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 2, bringing together leading regional experts to tackle pressing geopolitical and economic issues.
The event aligned with Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, setting the stage for high-level discussions on Southeast Asia’s strategic priorities.
This year marks a milestone for ASEAN, with the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, charting the bloc’s course for the next two decades. The summit, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community, gains added significance ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit slated for October 26–28.
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, in his keynote speech, stressed the need for deeper ties with policy research institutes and think tanks. He highlighted the cross-sectoral, multidimensional and rapidly evolving challenges facing ASEAN, which require new analytical frameworks and innovative policy responses. Expanding ASEAN’s engagement with Track II partners, scholars and researchers is therefore critical, he said.
The summit also welcomed delegates from Timor-Leste and external partners, underscoring the region’s commitment to diverse perspectives and ensuring ASEAN’s future is shaped through inclusive and comprehensive dialogue.
Discussions centred on three thematic sessions covering five key priorities: fostering digital trust for a safe and inclusive digital ASEAN, advancing sustainable development and green transition goals, deepening economic integration, reinforcing ASEAN’s centrality and engagement with regional and sub-regional groups, and strengthening ocean governance and maritime security.
Nearly 100 delegates from ASEAN member states and external partners attended the event, underscoring robust global and regional support for Track II diplomacy./.
