Hanoi (NNT/VNA) – Thailand's Trade Representative Werapong Prapha has revealed that meetings with EU officials and business leaders during a visit to Brussels advanced negotiations on the Thailand–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), expanding discussions on trade, investment, sustainability, and future industries.
Werapong took part in meetings between the Deputy Prime Minister and the Commerce Minister, Suphajee Suthumpun, and the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, as well as the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen.
The two sides agreed to expedite FTA negotiations and work toward resolving outstanding issues in agricultural products, industrial goods, government procurement, energy and raw materials, digital trade, and regulatory matters, including intellectual property.
The visit also included discussions on cooperation under the EU's Global Gateway strategy, covering the ASEAN Power Grid, water resource management, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and supply chain connectivity to encourage investment in emerging industries.
Additional meetings covered compliance with new EU environmental regulations, including the EU Deforestation Regulation and circular economy policies, as well as labour standards, supply chain transparency, and measures to prevent circumvention of trade rules.
Werapong also met with European business representatives to discuss the FTA, regulatory reforms, and investment trends. Participants expressed confidence in Thailand's role in linking European and ASEAN supply chains and supporting the early conclusion of the agreement./.
Thailand, UK strengthen cooperation to combat illegal cannabis smuggling
From October 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, the Customs Department of Thailand seized illegal cannabis in 3,309 cases, totalling more than 37,210 kilograms and valued at over 474 million THB. Of these, 3,266 cases involved attempted illegal exports.
