Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand's former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on October 22 announced her resignation as the leader of the Pheu Thai Party to pave the way for party restructuring.
In a written statement, Paetongtarn clarified that the move is necessary to completely overhaul the party structure ahead of the crucial upcoming election.
Paetongtarn described the decision as the first step in carrying out a strategic reform unveiled on October 7, aimed at creating a "complete, perfect new party” with a new and courageous vision for genuine change for the people.
Although she has stepped down as the party’s leader, Paetongtarn stated that she remains a member of the Pheu Thai Party and will work alongside all members to usher in a new era for the party.
Acting Party Secretary-General Sorawong Thienthong disclosed that following Paetongtarn’s removal as Prime Minister by Thailand’s Constitutional Court, there were calls to dissolve the Pheu Thai Party.
The party is expected to convene an extraordinary general assembly soon to elect a new leader and executive committee./.
