Third Indian Ocean Conference concludes in Hanoi

– The third Indian OceanConference wrapped up in Hanoi on August 28 having reached an agreeable commonperception of building a region of peace, stability, and prosperity.

Addressing the two-day event, Deputy PrimeMinister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh highlighted the significance ofbuilding regional architecture.

He emphasised the importance of connecting theIndian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, adding that the desire for a peaceful,stable, and prosperous region has become stronger given a number of challenges.

He underlined the principle of buildinginclusive, rule-based regional framework with the central role of ASEAN on thebasis of respecting independence and sovereignty, mutual trust, and win-winbenefits.

During the ministerial and senior levelexchanges, delegates shared their viewpoints on the opportunities, challenges,and visions while building regional security architecture.

Many affirmed the crucial role of Vietnam in theregion and said it was proper time for the country to host the third IndianOcean Conference.

They also shared concerns over regional securitymatters, including marine ones.

Participants underlined the importance of respectfor international law without using force so as to peacefully address disputes.

Representatives from developing countriessuggested creating an equal competitive playground and called on nations torespect one another and provide mutual support to promote peace, security,cooperation, and stability in the region.

Themed “Building Regional Architecture”, theconference attracted nearly 300 delegates from 40 countries and territories.–VNA
