Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian National Police conducted comprehensive security sweeps across Jakarta on December 21, as part of a high-level initiative to ensure public safety ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The inspections targeted high-traffic public areas and crowded areas, including the Jakarta Cathedral, the Gambir central railway station, and the iconic National Monument (Monas), and the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout - a major city landmark and traditional gathering spot.
They are part of a nationwide security campaign known as "Operasi Lilin 2025" (Operation Candle), a standard annual mobilisation of police and military personnel to secure the country’s year-end festivities. Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, the operation's public relations head, stated that the operations aimed to assess the readiness of personnel and equipment, as well as the coordination capabilities among relevant units.
He stressed that the Indonesian police are committed to providing safety and security for residents to celebrate Christmas and enjoy their year-end holidays.
Following the field visits, police confirmed that all monitored locations are currently secure and that personnel are fully deployed. They also reaffirmed their broader commitment to preventive measures, ensuring that both the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year celebrations remain peaceful for both locals and international visitors.

Indonesia records series of earthquakes in northern regions
At 9:21 on December 21 (local time), a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Ternate area in Indonesia's North Maluku province. The epicentre was located offshore, about 132 km northwest of Jailolo, at a depth of 30 km. The quake was caused by rock deformation along the Maluku Sea tectonic plate, with a reverse faulting mechanism.
