Three prosecuted for illegal trading of over 8.4 billion email accounts

Recently, the Criminal Police Division of the Tuyen Quang provincial Department of Public Security uncovered an organised group exploiting cyberspace to illegally infiltrate others’ email accounts for illicit gain. The suspects allegedly contacted foreign counterparts via Telegram to buy and sell leaked email information, including usernames and passwords obtained through cyberattacks.

Tuyen Quang (VNA) – Police in the northern province of Tuyen Quang on February 2 announced the prosecution of a group of suspects involved in the illegal trading and exchange of more than 8.4 billion email accounts.

Recently, the Criminal Police Division of the Tuyen Quang provincial Department of Public Security uncovered an organised group exploiting cyberspace to illegally infiltrate others’ email accounts for illicit gain. The suspects allegedly contacted foreign counterparts via Telegram to buy and sell leaked email information, including usernames and passwords obtained through cyberattacks.

They then used specialised software capable of automatically hacking into these email accounts to collect and analyse data, which was subsequently resold to other individuals online for illegal profits.

Based on investigation results, the provincial Investigation Police Agency decided to launch criminal proceedings and prosecute three suspects: L.V.D. (born in 2002, residing in Thanh Hoa province), D.D.D. (born in 2001, residing in Gia Lai province), and N.T.T. (born in 2000, residing in Hanoi). The suspects are charged with “illegally accessing another persons' computer network, telecommunications network or electronic devices” under Article 289 of the Penal Code.

Investigators found that from 2024 to 2025, the group traded and exchanged more than 8.4 billion email accounts of users worldwide, illegally accessing and collecting information for resale, earning hundreds of millions of VND.

The case is being further expanded, with police continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other related suspects in accordance with the law./.
