Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien asked the central coastal province of Thua Thien-Hue to continue rolling out concerted solutions to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing during his field trip to the locality on June 7.

Thua Thien-Hue needs to step up the communications work to raise the awareness of farmers, organisations and individuals about the observance of relevant international regulations, towards sustainable exploitation, he said.

Tien also asked the province to build and improve legal documents, monitor the operation of vessels, and trace the origin of catches, noting that violations of regulations must be strictly handled.

The province also should invest more in fishery infrastructure and increase personnel in the IUU combat, seeking the removal of the European Commission (EC)’s “yellow card” warning on Vietnamese seafood as soon as possible, he continued.

Thua Thien-Hue is now home to 679 fishing boats, of which 434 have a length of 15m and more. Up to 430 have been equipped with the vessel monitoring system (VMS).

There have been no fishing boats of Thua Thien-Hue operating illegally in foreign waters reported so far./.
