Nghe An (VNA) – A 500kg bomb left over from the war was safely detonated on July 4 morning in Than Linh commune, the central province of Nghe An.
The unexploded ordnance, which still had an intact detonator, was discovered on June 29 by a resident while she was clearing her garden in Hamlet 1 of the commune. She immediately reported it to local authorities.
The communal Military Command and the Area 1 - Van An Defence Command dispatched personnel to the site and confirmed it was an MK83 demolition bomb buried about 3.5 metres underground. Measuring 2.17 metres in length and 0.4 metres in diameter, the bomb weighed approximately 500kg and still had a live fuse, posing extreme danger.
This is the largest bomb ever found in the area, local military officials said.
Authorities quickly evacuated residents and livestock from the danger zone, set up warning signs, and deployed personnel to guard the site around the clock.
Applying professional skills, an engineering team under the Nghe An Military Command neutralised the detonator. The device was then carefully transported to Khe Luoi in Hamlet 8 of the same commune, where it was safely detonated./.
