Female peacekeepers bring souvenirs from int’l tour of duty

Three female "blue beret" soldiers who were on duty in Africa appeared in the presentation of artifacts by the girls of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations to the Vietnam Women's Museum. Jointly hosted by the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the “Trai tim nguoi linh” (Soldier’s Heart) club, and the Vietnam Women's Museum with the theme “Hearts For Peace”, the event spotlighted memorable and touching memories of Vietnamese officers and soldiers during the time they joined the UN peacekeeping missions. These are closely associated with memories and personal stories about their tireless efforts during their duty. The donations are personal items, work documents, commemorative gifts from family members, and souvenirs given by people at areas where the peacekeepers worked. One of the memorable stories must be told about Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thi Lien. Lien is the only woman in a group of Vietnamese officers who joined the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Central African Republic (CAR). Lien and her colleagues faced many difficulties, especially in the context of armed conflict and political instability during the raging COVID-19 epidemic. Lien vividly remembers the time when COVID-19 broke out in Central Africa: "At that time the whole country did not have a single mask". Seeing that situation, she thought of an action plan to sew masks to give to people. Lien made 400 face masks by herself in one month and also encouraged the locals to wear them as they were not used to wearing masks. (Photo: Minh Anh/Vietnam+)

United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) awarded a certificate of merit to Lien for her good deeds, which included making and presenting 400 face masks to the staff of MINUSCA and local people in Bangui. In his commendation, Force Commander of MINUSCA Lieutenant General Daniel Traore wrote that the good deed of the Vietnamese female officer shows the core value of the United Nations and she deserves to be an ambassador for Vietnam. Women soldiers living and working in Africa always find opportunities to meet and talk with children and women there. In their memory, despite living in lands with many conflicts, dangers, difficulties and deprivations, children still retain their innocence and purity.
