Laos, Thailand, Malaysia advance integrated power project

The cooperation reflects strategic progress in energy collaboration among Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, enhancing cross-border electricity trade through more effective regional energy resource management.

Bangkok (VNA) – Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Electricite Du Laos (EDL) and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed a tripartite Energy Wheeling Agreement Phase 2 (EWA Phase 2) under the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project Phase 2 (LTMS-PIP 2.0) on January 14.

EGAT Governor Narind Paowavanich said the success of multilateral cross-border renewable power trading among the four countries under LTMS-PIP Phase 2 marks another important step in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). The cooperation reflects strategic progress in energy collaboration among Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, enhancing cross-border electricity trade through more effective regional energy resource management.

He noted that the partnership will help strengthen long-term energy security, enhance grid resilience and support ASEAN’s future energy transition. EGAT stands ready to continue its role in transmitting electricity from Laos to Singapore, facilitating seamless cross-border power trading and promoting the development of interconnected low-carbon power systems at the regional level.

Souksavart Sosouphanh, Deputy Director General of EDL, said EDL is prepared to build on the success of the LTMS-PIP as a pioneer in supplying clean energy to the ASEAN region. The project will help expand participation by more countries while bolstering clean energy security and sustainable development across the region.

Meanwhile, Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, TNB’s Executive Director for Regulatory Management and Partnerships, affirmed that as a key stakeholder in the ASEAN Power Grid, TNB remains committed to strengthening regional energy security, leading the energy transition and continuously enhancing regional cooperation.

The signing paves the way for plans to increase cross-border power trading volumes from 100 megawatts (MW) to a maximum of 200 MW over a two-year period. Under the arrangement, electricity generated in Laos will be transmitted to Singapore via the power grids of Thailand and Malaysia through two transmission routes./.
