Kuala Lumpur (VNA) — Building a well-connected power grid through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) will strengthen regional integration, attract green investment, create quality jobs, and position the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a hub for clean-energy industry, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM-43) and related meetings on October 16, Anwar said this goal can be achieved through ASEAN’s unified efforts and political determination to harmonise regulations, finance infrastructure, and ensure effective governance.
According to the Malaysian PM, the APG, which was conceived more than two decades ago, reflects ASEAN’s aspiration to connect its power systems, share resources, and build resilience through interdependence.
This, he said, will enable ASEAN to tap into its renewable energy potential, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and deliver reliable and affordable electricity across borders.
Anwar also noted that the global energy landscape is changing under the pressures of decarbonisation, supply security, and affordability.
For ASEAN, home to 680 million people and among the world’s fastest-growing regions, this transformation needs to be managed responsibly, he stressed. He called on all member states to step up efforts to accelerate connectivity projects, harmonise legal frameworks, and enhance public–private partnerships./.
