Dak Lak (VNA) – The Central Highlands province of Dak Lak has basically completed the Quang Trung Campaign launched by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to swiftly rebuild and repair homes for people affected by natural disasters, helping hundreds of families stabilise their lives.
Following the devastating floods of mid-November last year, which swept away or severely damaged hundreds of houses across the province, affected households have now received new or repaired homes and are turning their attention to restoring production and livelihoods.
Busy tidying his newly handed-over home, Tran Van Khanh from Phu Huu hamlet, Hoa Thinh commune, recalled the floods, which swept away or completely destroyed six of the nine houses in his neighbourhood.
“After the flood, all people hope for was a temporary shelter to survive. But thanks to the care of the Party and the State, and the active involvement of the army, we now have solid houses that are safe against natural disasters and suitable for long-term stability,” Khanh said.
He added that these are not just places to live, but embody the responsibility and compassion of the Party, the State and the armed forces in times of hardship.
Another resident, Tran Thi Lanh, over 80 and living alone, said when floodwaters receded, her home had been completely destroyed, leaving her with nothing and unsure how to cope. Receiving a new house at the beginning of the new year, she stated, brought renewed confidence and motivation to move on.
According to the Dak Lak provincial People’s Committee, as of January 12, all 892 severely damaged houses in the province had been repaired, while 529 of the 606 homes that were collapsed, destroyed or swept away by floods had been rebuilt. Houses have been handed over in localities including Xuan Lanh, Hoa Xuan, Tuy An Dong, Phu Hoa 1, Tay Hoa, Son Hoa and Hoa Thinh.
Construction is continuing on the remaining 77 houses, with completion targeted for January 15. Of these, 16 houses in resettlement areas are scheduled for handover on January 19.
During the campaign, the army supported the construction and repair of 311 houses, deploying more than 4,000 officers and soldiers. The provincial public security force mobilised 530 personnel and nearly 9,648 workdays to assist in building and repairing 176 homes.
The rapid progress achieved in just over a month has demonstrated the strong determination and close coordination of the entire political system in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and ensuring stable, durable housing for affected residents amid increasingly complex climate change.
Colonel Cao Van Muoi, Deputy Chief of Staff of Military Region 5, said the campaign highlighted the enduring bond between the army and the people, with officers and soldiers working alongside local authorities and residents under difficult conditions.
Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Dao My said the campaign had helped people quickly stabilise their lives, adding that local authorities will continue to implement policies to support production recovery and secure sustainable livelihoods for households affected by the floods./.
