Hanoi (VNA) – The Investigation Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has officially launched a probe into six individuals at the Saigon Jewellery Company Limited (SJC) for the charges of embezzlement and abuse of positions and power while performing duties.

On September 16, 2024, an investigation was launched into the case of embezzlement and abuse of positions and power while performing duties at the SJC and related entities.

The information was released at a press conference held on December 31 by the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs to announce the outcomes of the 27th meeting of the Central Steering Committee for the Prevention and Control of Corruption, Wastefulness, and Negative Phenomena.

MPS spokesman Major General Hoang Anh Tuyen said the accused include Le Thuy Hang, Director of the SJC; Hoang Le Hue, Director of the SJC's Central Region branch; and Nguyen Thi Loc, an accountant at the branch.

The others are Mai Quoc Uy Vien, Director of the SJC's gold workshop; Tran Tan Phat, Deputy Director of the workshop; and Nguyen Thi Hue, Director of the firm's Hai Phong branch.

Tuyen noted preliminary investigation results revealed that the suspects had taken advantage of gold trading at stabilised prices to forge documents to misappropriate money and seek illegal profit.

The investigation agency is working to gather additional evidence, expand the investigation, and recover the misappropriated asset, he added.

At the press conference, Tuyen also highlighted the ministry's achievements in combating economic crimes and corruption. Between December 15, 2023, and December 14, 2024, police uncovered nearly 5,700 cases with over 10,200 individuals involved in crimes related to economic management, corruption, and abuse of power.

Furthermore, the force proactively identified risks of loss and wastefulness of State and public resources across various sectors. This led to the prosecution and investigation of several cases of mismanagement of land, mineral resources, and construction investments. Notable examples include the case of mineral resource losses at the Hung Thinh Company and the Ban Mong Reservoir project in Nghe An province.

Looking ahead, the MPS identified the fight against corruption and negative phenomena as one of the top priorities. In addition, wastefulness prevention and control will also receive special attention.

To perform this task, the ministry has directed its units and localities to strengthen the implementation of measures to detect and address activities causing losses and wastefulness of State and public assets and resources, the official emphasised./.
