Thai drug dealer fails in death penalty appeal

The Supreme People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City on April 4 rejected the appeal of Chimongkol Suaracha – a Thai national – and sentenced the 32-year-old to death for illegally trafficking drugs.

During the first trial, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court heardthat Vietnamese authorities had detected nearly 2kg of heroin hidden intwo albums in Chimongkol’s luggage as she was entering Vietnam ’s TanSon Nhat International Airport on October 1, 2012.

The Thai woman, who is a university graduate, had been promised a jobat an automobile company in Vietnam by a stranger, before being takento Brazil, where she met drug dealers and collaborated with them tohide drugs in her luggage and bring them to Vietnam.

Due to the large amount of heroin she transported, the court decided not to overturn the original death sentence.-VNA
