Vientiane (VNA) – The 2025 Thatluang Festival, considered the most important cultural and religious festival in Laos, is underway in Vientiane capital.
The opening ceremony on November 1 was attended by Lao Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoun, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam, along with many ambassadors, chargés d’affaires, and representatives of diplomatic missions, and international organisations in Laos.
In his remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Khaykhamphithoun said Thatluang Festival is a long-standing and cherished tradition that reflects reverence for the Buddha and the unity of the Lao people. It also serves to strengthen community bonds and inspire national pride.
He added that the festival is an opportunity to promote the image of a peaceful and hospitable Laos rich in cultural heritage to international friends, while attracting both domestic and foreign tourists to Vientiane and other destinations across the country.
The ceremony marked the beginning of five days of cultural and religious activities, including solemn Buddhist rituals, processions, offerings, and various community events showcasing Laos' identity.
Each evening, cultural performances are held to honour traditional values and highlight the welcoming image of Vientiane.
As part of the festival, exhibitions and displays introduce the history and development of Vientiane. There are also film screenings, martial arts performances, and traditional sports competitions in celebration of the Lao National Games.
A trade fair is taking place at the Thatluang vicinity and the Lao International Trade Exhibition and Convention Centre, featuring numerous booths displaying tourism products, handicrafts, “One District One Product” (ODOP) items, local consumer goods, and products from countries such as ASEAN members and China.
The food zone offers a variety of traditional Lao dishes, adding to the festive atmosphere steeped in the national identity.
The 2025 Thatluang Festival will run until November 5./.
