Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam spent about 3.16 trillion VND (more than 121.5 million USD) on diamond imports in the first six months of 2026, with imports from India accounting for more than half of the total value.

Preliminary data released by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance show that Vietnam purchased diamond worth nearly 121.54 million USD during the first half.

India remained the largest supplier, with the value reaching 63.2 million USD, representing around 52% of Vietnam's total diamond imports. For comparison, Vietnam imported 107.6 million USD worth of diamond from India throughout 2025.

Belgium ranked second, supplying 17.9 million USD worth of diamond during the period, compared with 51.7 million USD in the whole of last year.

Israel was the third-largest supplier, with imports worth 9 million USD, followed by Botswana at 7.7 million USD and Thailand at 5.1 million USD.

Other notable suppliers included the US (3.6 million USD), Hong Kong (China) (2.8 million USD), Japan (2.7 million USD) and China (2.2 million USD).

The Customs Department said under current regulations, rough diamond may only be imported from countries participating in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). Shipments must be accompanied by a valid KPCS certificate issued by the competent authority of the exporting country and comply with all customs documentation and clearance procedures.

Customs authorities are responsible for examining documentation, inspecting consignments, issuing certificates for imported rough diamond and managing imports in accordance with the law. Customs clearance is carried out on the basis of import declarations, KPCS certificates and other relevant documents submitted by importers.

The import figures have attracted heightened public attention following the recent dismantling of a major cross-border diamond smuggling ring by police in Thanh Hoa province. Investigators have charged 22 suspects and seized 1,100 diamonds. Police said the network had carried out 141 smuggling operations since 2024, trafficking more than 28,000 diamonds from Hong Kong into Vietnam, with an estimated turnover of 280 billion VND./.
