Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received UAE Ambassador to Vietnam Bader Abdullah Almatrooshi in Hanoi on March 17 to advance the implementation of outcomes from his recent phone talks with the UAE President, including enhanced cooperation in ensuring energy security.

Welcoming the ambassador during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the ambassador, his family, and the people of the UAE. He also sent his congratulations and thanks to the UAE President and Vice President for their efforts in promoting bilateral relations. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called on Qatar to strengthen energy cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, during a reception for Qatari Ambassador Khalid Ali Abdullah Abel in Hanoi.

Expressing concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, the PM highlighted the human toll, damage to civilian infrastructure and broader impacts on global economic and energy markets. Drawing on Vietnam’s own history, he underscored the importance of peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and negotiation in line with international law and the United Nations Charter. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed a dispatch outlining a series of tasks and solutions to accelerate export growth in 2026 amid mounting global uncertainties.

According to the dispatch, since early 2026, the Government and PM have rolled out successive directions, with ministries, agencies and localities stepping up efforts to broaden export markets. Read full story

- Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Gen. Luong Tam Quang and his Chinese counterpart Wang Xiaohong recently co-chaired the ninth ministerial-level conference on crime prevention and control, as part of Wang’s visit to Vietnam from March 15-17.

The meeting followed strategic guidance from Vietnam's Party General Secretary To Lam and Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping to advance bilateral ties in a new development phase. Read full story

- The Central Theory Council for the 2026–2031 term held its first meeting on March 17 at the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics.

The event was co-chaired by Nguyen Xuan Thang, member of the 13th Party Central Committee's Politburo, Chairman of the council; Doan Minh Huan, member of the 14th Party Central Committee's Politburo, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Standing Vice Chairman of the council. - The return of a billion-dollar high-tech project demonstrates that Vietnam’s strategy of selectively attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) - prioritising advanced technology and high value-added projects - is a sound policy that is delivering tangible results.

A notable development in Vietnam’s FDI landscape during the first two months of 2026 is the reappearance of a billion-dollar project. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 16 signed a decision issuing a plan for enforcing the Law on Cybersecurity, setting out detailed tasks, deadlines and responsibilities for relevant units to drive its effective rollout.

The plan is designed to secure timely, coordinated, efficient and effective enforcement of the law. It specifies the roles of lead and coordinating agencies and coordination mechanisms among ministries, ministry-level agencies, Government bodies, and People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities nationwide. It also targets greater public awareness of the law and higher sense of enforcement responsibilities among authorities at all levels, relevant agencies and entities. Read full story

- The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) 2026 is set to return from May 30 to July 11, bringing together 10 international fireworks teams, including four newcomers, in a vibrant spectacle expected to light up the Han River throughout the festive season.

Held under the theme “Da Nang – United Horizons,” this year’s festival will feature teams from nine countries and territories: Vietnam, China, Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, Japan, Macau (China) and Australia./. Read full story

16th NA reviews amendments to four tax-related laws on April 21

Lawmakers are expected to discuss the supplementary assessment of the implementation of the 2025 socio-economic development plan and state budget, as well as performance in the early months of 2026. They will also review the five-year socio-economic development plan for 2026–2030, thrift practices and anti-wastefulness efforts in 2025, and progress in achieving national gender equality targets. The session is broadcast live on radio and television, enabling voters and the public to follow proceedings.

Draft law proposes flexible tax thresholds, extended incentives for EVs

Presenting the Government’s proposal, Minister of Finance Ngo Van Tuan said the draft law proposes not to stipulate specific revenue thresholds for exemption from personal income tax or value-added tax for household and individual businesses in the law, instead assigning the Government to set these thresholds.

Lawmakers suggest groundbreaking mechanisms to revive Vietnamese culture

The draft resolution seeks to lure more investment into cultural industries, aiming for the sector to contribute 7% to GDP by 2030 and 9% by 2045. It also sets ambitious goals of ranking Vietnam among the top three countries in Southeast Asia and the global top 30 for national soft power.

Pathways to double-digit growth to be tabled at 16th NA’s first session

In the morning sitting on April 20, deputies are expected to hear proposals and verification reports on a range of draft resolutions. The documents cover breakthrough mechanisms and policies for the development of Vietnamese culture; the establishment of Dong Nai as a centrally run city; a pilot framework for public lawyer institution; and special mechanisms to address land law violations committed prior to the 2024 Land Law taking effect, alongside measures to resolve long-delayed and stalled projects.

NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man’s working trip to Italy and Türkiye achieved important and comprehensive results at both bilateral and multilateral levels. It not only highlighted a proactive and responsible Vietnamese National Assembly with active and practical contributions to the IPU, but also created new momentum to deepen relations with key partners, including in Europe and the Middle East.
