Hanoi (VNA) - The Vietnam Classical Music Association (VCMA) has announced that it will stage a concert in Hai Phong city on August 29 to celebrate the National Day (September 2) and Vietnam Music Day (September 3).
The “Realms of Sound” concert, to be held at Hoa Phuong Theatre, will take audiences on a journey through diverse cultural spaces and emotional landscapes. It will feature award-winning Vietnamese musicians Do Hien An, Ngo Phuong Vi and Nguyen Viet Trung on piano, Hoang Manh Lam on oboe and Tran Khanh Quang on clarinet.
The concert will open with two works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – “Dumka in C minor, Op. 59” and “June: Barcarolle, Op. 37a, No. 6” – followed by George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, which blends classical music with jazz and blues to portray the energy and lyricism of urban life.
Three works then showcase different facets of 19th-century piano music: Frédéric Chopin’s “Mazurka in G minor, Op. 67, No. 2” and “Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op. 64, No. 2”, and Franz Liszt’s “La Campanella, S. 141, No. 3”.
The final part will feature interplay among different instruments, with Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda’s “Morceau de salon, Op. 228” for oboe and piano, and Michael Webster’s “Carmen Rhapsody”, which brings melodies from the opera “Carmen” into a dialogue between piano, oboe and clarinet.
VCMA Vice President and Secretary General Tran Le Chien said the concert marks the beginning of cooperation between the association and the municipal People’s Committee, which is part of Hai Phong’s project to become a “City of Music” during 2026-2030, with a vision to 2045.
The project aims to build a professional music ecosystem and help the northern city move toward meeting the criteria of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in music.
The association will work with Hai Phong on long-term activities, including professional consultation, music education, teacher training, support for young talents, scholarship programmes and connections among Vietnamese and international artists.
“Realms of Sound” will launch a series of activities linking performance with education, talent development and social resources to promote the cultural industries and build a distinctive music ecosystem, enriching the city’s cultural and spiritual life./.
