Gia Lai (VNA) – The 16th Regional Symposium of the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB), themed “Biotechnology for Sustainable Development”, was held in the central province of Gia Lai on February 2, attracting nearly 120 delegates, including scientists, young researchers, and students from 14 countries and territories.
Top professors and world-famous scientists in biotechnology shared and discussed nearly 80 papers at plenary, parallel, and poster sessions. Their work covered a broad range of topics, from medical and pharmaceutical to agricultural, aquatic, and animal fields, as well as industrial, environmental, bioinformatics, and advanced biotechnology.
Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, Vo Cao Thi Mong Hoai expressed her hope that the symposium would generate valuable academic outcomes and help promote scientific cooperation in biotechnology towards sustainable development in Asia and the wider world.
A key highlight was the official announcement of the establishment of the AFOB liaison office in Vietnam, based at the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Gia Lai’s Quy Nhon Nam. This event marked an important milestone, affirming Vietnam’s growing prestige and increasingly prominent role within the Asian biotechnology network, and opening up new opportunities to strengthen cooperation in research, training and technology transfer between domestic and international scientists, Hoai noted.
The regional symposium also provided Gia Lai with the opportunity to welcome its first international scientific delegation in 2026, setting the tone for dynamic sci-tech cooperation activities in the locality, in line with Politburo Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024, on breakthroughs in the development of science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation./.
