Vientiane (VNA) - On the eve of Party General Secretary To Lam’s state visit to Laos, Lao media on February 4 published numerous articles underscoring the historic significance of the trip.
Articles on the electronic editions of Pathet Lao of the Lao News Agency (KPL), and the Lao Public Security newspaper described the visit as vivid evidence of the close bonds, special attention and personal rapport between General Secretary Lam and other Vietnamese leaders, and General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and other Lao leaders.
The visit is expected to nurture the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic partnership between the two countries, they underlined.
The Lao media stressed that this is General Secretary Lam’s first overseas visit in 2026 and his first visit to Laos since assuming office as General Secretary of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It also marks the first reception hosted by the Party, State and people of Laos following the successful conclusion of the 12th National Congress of the LPRP.
According to the articles, the visit not only carries major historical significance but also reaffirms the high level of political trust and Vietnam’s consistent policy of attaching the highest importance to the special relationship with Laos.
The visit takes place in a positive atmosphere following the successful Party congresses in both countries and soon after the successful visit to Vietnam by LPRP General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse in late January. The frequent exchanges of high-level visits were seen as a clear demonstration of the close coordination, mutual support and readiness of the two sides to share development experience while safeguarding and advancing their special relationship.
They noted that despite complex and fast-changing global and regional developments, under the leadership of the two Parties and States, the special Vietnam–Laos relationship has continued to deepen, delivering tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries. With each Party congress having set strategic directions and major policy decisions for the new development stage, the visit is viewed as reflecting the high-level political determination and strategic alignment in implementing these goals.
The media highlighted close coordination in strategic issues related to security and development, enhanced information exchange and experience sharing in Party building, political system reform, socio-economic development, building independent and self-reliant economies, ensuring national defence and security, and expanding international integration.
Political relations have been identified as the core guiding comprehensive cooperation, while defence-security cooperation remains a key pillar for stability and social order. Economic, trade, investment and infrastructure cooperation was expected to see strong breakthroughs, elevating it into a major pillar of strategic cohesion, alongside continued cooperation in culture, education and human resources development as a long-term foundation for the enduring Vietnam–Laos relationship.
The articles concluded that the frequent high-level meetings and early post-congress visits between the leaders of the two Parties and States vividly reflect the deep political trust and close strategic bond of the comradely and brotherly relationship forged through shared struggle and nurtured across generations. Such exchanges provide opportunities for both sides to review cooperation outcomes, define future directions, share strategic visions and enhance policy coordination, laying a solid foundation for the Vietnam–Laos relationship to develop more substantively and effectively for the benefit of both nations’ peoples, they added./.
