Hanoi (VNA) – The Lao government has assured the public that the country's fuel supply remains stable despite disruptions in the global oil market, while calling on citizens to conserve fuel amid continued uncertainty in global supply.
At a press conference on March 11, government spokesperson Sonexay Sitphaxay and Lao Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Chanthaboun Soukaloun provided an update on the national fuel supply situation.
Officials noted that escalating instability in the Middle East – a key oil-producing region – has driven global fuel prices up and reduced the import capacity of many countries, including Laos. These disruptions have significantly affected oil production and exports from the region.
However, they affirmed that current fuel reserves remain sufficient to meet short-term consumption needs and that imports are proceeding at a relatively normal level. The Lao government has developed emergency response plans for both the short and medium term, with adjustments to be made depending on further developments.
Recent temporary shortages at some fuel stations were mainly due to delays in transporting fuel from storage depots to retail outlets, according to the officials.
The Lao government is currently closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant agencies at all levels to ensure a steady fuel supply for daily consumption and development projects. At the same time, through existing cooperation mechanisms, the government is strengthening coordination with neighbouring countries to proactively respond to possible changes in the global oil market./.
