Hanoi (VNA) - A huge fire engulfed a pub in Bangkok, Thailand, early July 13, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens before firefighters brought the blaze under control, local officials reported.
Video footage shared online by emergency responders shows a huge blaze raging and plumes coming out of the front door of the Na Ladprao pub in the northern part of the Thai capital. Many people were seen trying to flee as dense black smoke billowed into the sky. Rescue said the fire was reported around midnight.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters at the scene that 27 people had been confirmed dead, while several others were taken to hospital with injuries. He said authorities were investigating the cause of the fire.
According to Anutin, a musician performing at the pub said he saw smoke coming from an electrical panel near the stage before the power went out. A loud explosion followed, and thick smoke quickly spread throughout the premises.
The PM added that many victims were found in restrooms at the rear of the pub.
Firefighters took about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Photographs taken after the fire showed charred tables and chairs and severe damage to the pub's interior.
Thailand has witnessed similar tragedies in the past. In 2022, a fire at a music pub in the country's eastern region killed 14 people.
More than a decade earlier, 66 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a nightclub fire during the New Year celebration on January 1, 2009, at Bangkok's Santika Club. The blaze was believed to have been triggered by an indoor fireworks display./.
