Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia has unveiled a strategic framework to safeguard the country against future cyber threats posed by quantum computing, introducing a national post-quantum cryptography migration plan and a quantum cryptography sandbox.
As reported by the country’s national news agency Bernama, when launching the National Security Month 2026 on July 9, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia must shift from conventional security methods to a more comprehensive strategy to address rapidly evolving threats, including emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), post-quantum cryptography and drones.
The PM said the government has introduced the National Cryptography Policy, the MyKriptografi Action Plan, and Malaysia's post-quantum cryptography sandbox programme to prepare the country for rapid technological advances.
He added that close cooperation with friendly countries remains essential in addressing cross-border threats, including cybersecurity, border security and the use of emerging technologies.
National Security Council Director-General Datuk Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin explained that these measures are part of a broader effort to harden government systems against the next generation of digital threats.
The migration plan and sandbox are designed to build a robust national cryptography ecosystem, preparing Malaysia for an era where quantum computers could potentially compromise the majority of today’s encryption methods.
Nushirwan stated that these initiatives complement the Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy 2025-2030, which employs a whole-of-nation approach by uniting government agencies, industry, academia, and the public to bolster cyber resilience./.
