- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 6 stressed the need to focus leadership, manpower and resources on key railway projects, so that they can be put into operation soon, thereby contributing to socio-economic development and better living standards for the people.

Chairing the fifth meeting of the steering committee for key national railway projects, connected online with 18 provinces and cities through which railway projects are planned to pass through, PM Chinh, who also heads the committee, noted that after four previous meetings, the implementation of major and important national railway projects has recorded positive progress. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 6 proposed Vietnam and Canada promote new growth drivers, including cooperation in science and technology and innovation, climate change response, energy transition, infrastructure and logistics development, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Welcoming Canadian Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai on a working visit to Vietnam, PM Chinh stated that the Vietnam – Canada Comprehensive Partnership has been developing positively across all fields, underpinned by a solid political foundation and shared interests and values. - The Ministry of Finance and the finance sector must take the lead in renewing mindset and institutions this year, truly deserving their role as the Government’s key advisory and coordinating body for macroeconomic management, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said on January 6.

- Politburo member and Standing member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu on January 6 inspected preparations for the upcoming 14th National Party Congress at the National Convention Centre (NCC) in Hanoi.

The leader conducted on-site inspections of the main hall, where the congress will take place, as well as several functional rooms serving the event. He reviewed and guided key aspects, including an exhibition space in the main lobby, ceremonial decorations at the centre of the main hall, the press centre, sound and lighting systems, seating arrangements for delegates and guests, and other supporting facilities. - The agriculture and environment sector has set an agro-forestry-aquatic export target of 73-74 billion USD for 2026, requiring the sector to remain steadfast in its strategy of market opening and boosting export efficiency, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien.

Speaking at the ministry’s regular press briefing on January 6, Tien said 2026 is forecast to pose even greater challenges than 2025. However, the sector has more than 40 years of Doi moi (renewal) experience, while recent agricultural restructuring has created a solid foundation for growth. Read full story

- Hanoi aims to cut average annual PM2.5 concentrations by around 20% by 2030 compared to 2024 levels, lowering them to below 40 µg/m³, as air pollution remains a serious challenge for the capital and other major urban areas.

The goal was emphasised at a January 6 seminar on tackling air pollution in Hanoi, set against the backdrop of new Government and city policies aimed at improving air quality, reducing emissions, and fostering green, sustainable urban growth. Read full story

- Vietnam, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), has overcome many challenges and emerged as a bright spot in the global panorama, laying a solid foundation for a new period of development, according to Professor Vu Minh Khuong of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency on the thresholds of the 14th National Party Congress, Khuong noted the word “resolute” to describe the CPV’s leadership and Vietnam’s trajectory during the turbulent 2020–2025 term. He expressed his belief that the country can overcome any challenges.

- Ho Chi Minh City has set an economic growth target of over 10% for 2026, based on favourable international conditions and the early impact of the amended Resolution 98 on special mechanisms and policies for the city.

The goal was announced at a conference reviewing socio-economic development in 2025 and outlining tasks for 2026, held on January 6. Read full story
