Tay Ninh (VNA) – Authorities in the southwestern border province of Tay Ninh have busted a drug trafficking ring who were transporting 12.2kg of methamphetamine from Cambodia into Vietnam.

Huynh Van Lam, 37, residing in Long Thanh Nam commune, Hoa Thanh district, Tay Ninh province, was caught red-handed on October 20 when he was transporting 4kg of meth hidden in tea packages in his motorbike. He had previously sentenced to seven years in prison.

One day later, the province’s competent forces arrested Cambodian-Vietnamese Choun Phi Rin, 41, residing in Cambodia’s Svay Rieng province and Van Ngoc Phuong, 26, residing in Long Thanh commune, Tan Chau district, An Giang province. Phuong is Choun Phi Rin’s sister in law.

The authorities seized an additional 8.2 kg of methamphetamine, 600 million VND and 50,000 USD in cash and a seven-seat car.

Choun Phi Rin is reported to have received 10 years behind bars for trading in and transporting drugs.

Police are expanding their investigation into the operation of the drug trafficking ring.

According to Colonel Le Hong Vuong, Commander of the provincial Border Guard Command, the drug trafficking situation in the province was becoming more complicated.

Traffickers often gather at a casino in Cambodia’s Bavet City, Svay Rieng province which is opposite Vietnam’s Moc Bai International Border Gate, and transport drugs by motorbike at night from Cambodia to Vietnam. When they are stopped, they often flee to Cambodia.

Tay Ninh’s border guards have busted 22 drug trafficking cases since the beginning of this year, confiscating more than 25kg of methamphetamine and 12,000 pills, and arresting 35 traffickers.-VNA
