Bangkok (VNA) - The government of Thailand will seek support from social media platforms to combat fake news, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES) Prasert Jantararuangtong has said.
The DES Ministry will seek cooperation from social media platforms to prevent the spread of fake news and monitor accounts related to such activities, he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the newly established Anti-Fake News Centre (AFNC).
The Deputy Prime Minister said he had met with representatives of major social media platforms operating in Thailand and received their agreement to cooperate. Specifically, measures to be implemented include the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect and block the spread of fake news on platforms, increasing dedicated personnel to verify information, and notifying the Electronic Transactions Development Agency when violations are detected so that appropriate action can be taken. Meanwhile, advertisers will be required to verify their identities on social media platforms.
Prasert added that the DES Ministry will work closely with the Public Relations Department (PRD) in verifying suspected fake news within a maximum timeframe of three hours. The Ministry of Justice, the Royal Thai Police, and the Office of the Attorney General are tasked with reviewing legal charges against those spreading fake news.
In addition, the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has been assigned to investigate whether any businesses are involved in disseminating fake news on the Internet./.
