Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has stepped up efforts to combat fake news and misinformation with the launch of the second phase of the “Zero Fake News” campaign under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) mechanism.
The campaign was officially launched on March 12 by the Ministry of Information at a ceremony chaired by Information Minister Neth Pheaktra. The event brought together senior government officials, journalists, media experts and digital content creators.
The initiative aims to enhance information quality in the digital era through three main strategies. These include combating the spread of fake news within Cambodia and across the Greater Mekong Subregion, promoting verified news produced by professional media organisations and digital content creators, and strengthening media literacy education for the public in Cambodia and neighbouring Mekong countries.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Minister Neth Pheaktra said the initiative is not only a national effort but also part of broader regional cooperation aimed at protecting countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion from the negative impacts of misinformation.
He noted that the cross-border campaign seeks to raise public awareness in Cambodia and across the region about the dangers of fake news through various communication activities, including written and audio messages, high-level discussions and cooperation among media networks from participating countries.
The minister emphasised that the campaign comes at a time when digital media is expanding rapidly and the boundary between fact and fiction is increasingly blurred. He added that the initiative complements Cambodia’s nationwide “Say No to Fake News” campaign launched in 2025.
According to Pheaktra, both journalists and citizens play a vital role in the fight against misinformation. Providing and accessing accurate information is considered one of the most effective measures to counter fake news.
The campaign will be implemented in the capital city of Phnom Penh and across all 24 provinces of Cambodia, with the goal of reducing and eventually eliminating fake news from social media platforms in the country.
Over the past decade, Cambodia has implemented more than 100 projects funded by the LMC Special Fund, including five projects led by the Ministry of Information./.
