Hanoi (VNA) – The Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee convened its third consultative conference in Hanoi on February 11, reaching consensus on a list of 217 candidates from central agencies and organisations eligible to stand for the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly (NA).
The conference took place in a hybrid format, blending in-person attendance with online links to 11 locations where Presidium members live and work.
Politburo member and Secretary of the Party Central Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai, who is also Secretary of the Party Committee of the VFF and central mass organisations, President of the VFF Central Committee and Vice Chairwoman of the National Election Council, attended the event. Vice Chairwoman of the NA Nguyen Thi Thanh and other incumbent and former members of the Party Central Committee, along with representatives of VFF member organisations and central agencies, were also present.
Earlier, on February 2, the Presidium held its second consultative conference to draw up a preliminary list of 217 nominees from central agencies for the election. On February 5, the NA Standing Committee issued Resolution No. 1277, making a second adjustment to the structure, composition and number of candidates nominated by central and local bodies. Accordingly, a total of 1,093 preliminary nominees were listed nationwide, including 217 from central agencies, whose number remained unchanged.
As of February 8, agencies and organisations at the central level had coordinated with commune-level VFF Committees to complete meetings seeking opinions from voters in candidates’ places of residence.
Presenting a report on the process, VFF Vice President Hoang Cong Thuy said the meetings were conducted democratically and lawfully, with full attendance as stipulated. All 217 nominees received 100% approval from voters at their workplaces, with no opinions requiring verification.
From February 4 to 8, the Standing Boards of commune-level VFF Committees, in coordination with People’s Committees in 67 communes and wards across 17 provinces and cities where the nominees reside, organised conferences to gather voters’ feedback. These meetings were held publicly, seriously and in strict compliance with legal procedures.
Of the 217 nominees, 152 seek re-election (70%), 48 are women (22.12%), five are non-Party members (2.3%), and 23 are from ethnic minority groups (10.6%).
Addressing the conference, Hoai stressed the need to thoroughly review candidates’ information to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. She expressed the hope that the nominees, particularly those for leadership positions, will prove worthy of the trust placed in them by voters and the VFF.
She affirmed that the upcoming elections for the 16th NA and People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term constitute a major political event and a broad democratic exercise. As the body presiding over the consultative process, the VFF at all levels will continue to uphold responsibility, transparency and close coordination with relevant agencies in the elections./.
