Hanoi (VNA) – Typhoon Kalmaegi, the 13th storm arising in the East Sea so far this year, along with its circulation had left five people dead and six injured as of early November 7, and caused widespread damage in central localities, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
The authority reported that a total of 52 houses collapsed, while 2,593 others were damaged or lost their roofs, including 2,412 in Gia Lai. The vessel Star Bueno ran aground in the Dung Quat waters of Quang Ngai province.
Although the storm was considered one of the most powerful to impact the central and Central Highlands regions, thanks to the close attention and direction of the Party and State leaders, the proactive response of the Government and local authorities, and the preparedness of local residents, the damage was significantly mitigated compared to previous storms of similar intensity.
To cope with the aftermath of the storm’s circulation, the National Civil Defence Steering Committee has called on ministries, sectors, and localities to urgently implement coordinated recovery measures, swiftly stabilise people’s lives, restore production and business activities, and contribute to achieving the 2025 growth targets.
Localities have been urged to promptly assess losses, prioritise the repair of schools, hospitals, and houses damaged or destroyed by the storm, and ensure that residents have access to food, shelter, medical care, and education. Immediate attention is also being given to repairing dykes and reservoirs, and handling the Star Bueno grounding incident.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, early on November 7, the tropical depression (resulting from Tyhoon Kalmaegi) further weakened into a low-pressure area over southern Laos. It is forecast to continue moving west-northwest over the next 12 hours before dissipating./.
