Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has instructed military and police forces to maintain a high level of readiness and actively engage in efforts to address consequences of Typhoon Kajiki, which made landfall in central Vietnam on late August 25 afternoon, with priority given to schools, healthcare facilities, policy beneficiaries, and low-income groups.
He made the request while chairing a meeting held at the Government's frontline command based in Nghe An province on August 26 to evaluate the typhoon’s impact and put forward recovery measures.
Ha spoke highly of the swift, timely, and drastic response by Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, and Ha Tinh province while asking Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, and Hue city to review the capacity of local dyke systems.
He told Quang Tri, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Hue to pay special attention to mountainous areas where the focus on preventing flash floods and landslides must be even greater than that on storm preparedness and response.
Local authorities must inspect densely populated areas near streams and rivers and take timely actions, especially by evacuating residents to safe locations, he stressed.
The Deputy PM requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to push ahead with weather forecasting, and review all inter-reservoir operation plans and scenarios to ensure safety.
On the same day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment required the People's Committees of Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh provinces to direct relevant agencies and units to urgently conduct inspections, reviews, and practical implementation of dyke reinforcement plans. This includes protecting critical dyke sections, addressing locations where incidents previously occurred but have not yet been solved, and ensuring the safety of ongoing dyke construction works.
Localities were asked to closely monitor floodwater levels on rivers and dyke conditions, and promptly report any incidents, if they occur, to the ministry for coordinated direction and response.
Due to the impact of Typhoon Kajiki, the fifth storm to appear in the East Sea this year, northern and central localities are required to stay vigilant to respond to possible flashfloods and landslides./.
