Laos opens first session of 10th National Assembly

Vientiane (VNA) – The 10th National Assembly (NA) of Laos convened its first session in Vientiane on March 23, chaired by Politburo member and President of the ninth National Assembly Xaysomphon Phomvihane.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Xaysomphon Phomvihane said the session will consider and adopt a number of key national matters, including validation of deputies’ mandates, election of senior state leaders, and approval of the country’s 10th five-year socio-economic development plan for 2026–2030.

Lawmakers are also set to review, in principle, a railway project linking Thakhek township in Khammuon province with Mu Gia at the Laos–Vietnam border under a build–operate–transfer (BOT) model, along with five-year operational plans for major judicial, inspection and audit institutions and the NA’s legislative agenda for 2026–2030.

During the opening sitting, deputies re-elected Xaysomphon Phomvihane as President of the 10th NA. Thongloun Sisoulith was elected President of Laos, Viengthong Siphandone Vice President, and Sonexay Siphandone Prime Minister, together with six Deputy Prime Ministers.

The session also approved key judicial and oversight appointments, including the heads of the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office, the State Inspection Authority, and the State Audit Organisation./.
