Thanh Hoa tightens management to address ineligible fishing boats

To address the limitations in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Sam Son city has established a inter-sectoral force to combat IUU fishing. The task force regularly directs, guides, inspects, and handles two-no (unregistered, unlicensed) and three-no (unregistered, uninspected, unlicensed) fishing boats in its communes and wards.

Thanh Hoa (VNA) - Authorities in the central coastal province of Thanh Hoa have actively worked to solve difficulties and cooperated with fishermen to thoroughly handle fishing boats without registration, inspection, and license.

As a coastal locality with a large number of fishing boats, Sam Son city currently has over 1,600 vessels, including 150 ones that are 15 metres or longer. To address the limitations in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the city has established a inter-sectoral force to combat IUU fishing. The task force regularly directs, guides, inspects, and handles "two-no" (unregistered, unlicensed) and "three-no" (unregistered, uninspected, unlicensed) fishing boats in its communes and wards.

To raise awareness among fishermen, the city's Border Guard Station, the Lach Hoi Fishery Port Management Board, and local communes and wards frequently assist the owners of ineligible boats in completing the required documents. They are also resolute in preventing those without proper documents from going out to the sea, while relocating them to Quang Tien ward's storm shelter for settlement.

As of early March 2025, Thanh Hoa has completed the inspection and issued registration certificates for 497 out of 522 ineligible fishing boats; and inserted their information into the National Fisheries Database System.

Since the beginning of this year, local authorities have stepped up the review, verification, and collaboration with fishing boat owners who involve in IUU fishing, as well as those at high risk of violations. They have focused their efforts by establishing patrol and inspection teams to monitor the sea, river mouths, and fishing ports. As a result, they have discovered and issued violation reports for 12 cases, with a total fine of 142 million VND (5,550 USD)./.
