Hanoi (VNA) – An international workshop on intellectual property (IP) education for ASEAN school administrators and teachers opened in Hanoi on November 25.
Co-hosted by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IPVN) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Academy, the Japan Patent Office (JPO), and India’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), the event aimed to facilitate the exchange of experience in IP curricula development and introduce relevant teaching resources from WIPO. It also featured hands-on training through group exercises, lesson design, case study discussions and field visits to several schools in the capital.
In his opening speech, IPVN Deputy Director General Nguyen Hoang Giang said rapid technological change across the globe and the region is fundamentally altering innovation models and the future of learning and work. In such context, IP has become a strategic tool, not only for companies, but also as a measure of innovation capacity and knowledge quality.
SMARTSCHOOL, along with several Vietnamese schools already piloting IP education activities, would present early outcomes, with the goal of scaling practical IP activities to students nationwide, he said.
According to him, IPVN stands ready to work closely with education sector, domestic and foreign organisations to enhance teacher capacity, develop teaching materials and launch IP-related programmes. The office, he added, always strengthens cooperation with ASEAN countries to build a regional network for sharing IP education resources, enabling mutual learning and joint development.
Altaye Tedla, Director of the WIPO Academy, said the workshop is part of a series of events advancing IP and innovation education for youth in Vietnam and ASEAN. The series aim to equip policymakers, curriculum designers, teachers and education administrators with IP knowledge and skills, foster the integration of innovation into general education, build a regional resource sharing network, and support early-stage entrepreneurship among youth.
Experts from WIPO, JPO, India’s Atal Innovation Mission, LUT University in Finland, and Georgia discussed current policies and the status of IP education, IP education practices in Vietnam, the importance of teaching innovation to young learners, the INCIPE IP certificate course, Atal Tinkering labs and their role in shaping future innovators, and JPO-led initiatives to spur youth invention./.
