Gia Lai (VNA) - In recent days, the Border Guard Command of Gia Lai province has directed border guard stations in coastal areas to step up patrols and inspections, and resolutely prohibit any fishing vessels lacking the required documents from setting sail.
At the same time, they have strictly handled violations such as vessels failing to complete departure and entry procedures or lacking captain and chief engineer certificates.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tung Giang, Political Commissar of the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station, said that regardless of daytime or night-time, the station and the Border Guard Flotilla No. 2, in coordination with the Fisheries Sub-Department, local militia, and Quy Nhon Ward Police, form a task force on duty to inspect all fishing vessels entering or leaving the port.
Any ‘three-no’ fishing boats - those without registration, inspection certificates, and fishing licenses - as well as ships operating outside their licensed fishing activities, are strictly prohibited from going out to sea, Giang stressed.
As a result, dozens of fishing vessels violating regulations on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing were handled from October 2 to 6.
According to Colonel Tran Tien Hai, Deputy Commander of the provincial Military High Command and Commander of the provincial Border Guard Command, the unit assigns responsibility to the heads of border guard stations if fishing vessels within their management areas commit violations, in line with the principle of “clear accountability in personnel, tasks, responsibilities, and authority,” thereby contributing to improving the effectiveness of anti-IUU fishing efforts./.
Fishermen join frontline efforts to combat IUU fishing
Alongside enforcement agencies, fishermen have shown strong responsibility, contributing vessels and resources, and serving as “extended arms” of border guards in raising awareness, safeguarding maritime sovereignty, and protecting aquatic resources.
