Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on July 6 hosted an official welcome ceremony for Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Jakarta before the Indonesia – Singapore Leaders' Retreat.
Speaking after his talks with Wong, Prabowo said the two sides held intensive and very productive discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating in responding to regional and global challenges.
He stressed that economic cooperation remains the cornerstone of bilateral ties, with both countries agreeing to expand collaboration in trade, connectivity, energy, the digital economy, cybersecurity, food and food security.
During the visit, the two sides signed 26 cooperation agreements, including 18 government-to-government agreements and eight business ones. The deals focus on emerging drivers of bilateral cooperation, including trade, investment, energy, the digital economy, cybersecurity, food supply chain development, environmental cooperation and carbon trading.
The two sides agreed to continue implementing existing agreements in defence and security while promoting people-to-people exchanges through stronger connectivity, tourism, education and youth cooperation.
Indonesia and Singapore agreed to safeguard the Strait of Malacca from risks such as pollution, maritime accidents, and piracy by continuing to coordinate with Malaysia and Thailand. The management of the international shipping lane will continue to be guided by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to ensure the waterway stays open and secure for all users.
Regarding regional issues, the two leaders reiterated ASEAN's position that all disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy.
The 26 newly signed agreements are expected to expand cooperation across strategic sectors while reinforcing the role of Indonesia and Singapore in advancing ASEAN integration and sustainable development./.
Singapore, Indonesia work on carbon credits, cross-border trade
The two countries will collaborate on carbon credits under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on July 6 at the annual Singapore – Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat held in Jakarta, where Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
