Ba Ria – Vung Tau (VNA) – Five Chinese who are crewmembers of fishing boat CM46799A in distress off the coast of the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau last month were handed over to the Chinese Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City on January 8.

The hand-over event was jointly held by the provincial Border Guard Command, Department of Foreign Affairs, steering committee for natural disaster prevention and search and rescue, local police, and Vietnam Coast Guard Region 3 Command.

All of the fishermen were in stable health conditions.

On December 30, a fishing vessel captained by Lai Kin Wah, a Chinese national, sank at 6:00 am around 60 nautical miles to the southeast of Con Dao island. The five crew members abandoned the ship and were found clutching life buoys.

Coast guard vessel 8005, which was returning from India, diverted its course after receiving the distress information. The rescue team then brought all the sailors aboard at 5:30 pm the same day and gave them immediate medical care, clothes, and provisions.

At the event, Chinese Consul General Xu Zhou acknowledged Vietnam's prompt response and comprehensive support, including medical care and assistance in repatriation procedures./.
