Singapore (VNA) – About 36,000 teachers and allied educators in Singapore will receive salary increases of between 2% and 9% from October 1, as part of efforts to keep pay competitive and attract and retain quality educators, the Ministry of Education Singapore (MOE) has announced.
The pay adjustment will apply to around 33,000 education officers, 1,700 allied educators, and 1,100 kindergarten teachers under MOE.
The ministry said salary revisions for each grade are determined based on the gap between current pay levels and market benchmarks. Positions with larger gaps will see more significant adjustments. In addition to these periodic revisions, eligible staff will continue to receive annual merit-based increments tied to their performance.
MOE emphasised that teachers form the backbone of the country’s education system. Beyond salary adjustments, the ministry pledged to continue supporting professional development by providing opportunities for educators to upgrade their skills and advance throughout their careers.
Welcoming the move, the Singapore Teachers’ Union described the pay rise as a positive and necessary step. However, it stressed that more comprehensive measures are needed to ensure the long-term attractiveness and sustainability of the teaching profession.
These include improvements in allowances, clearer career progression pathways, and enhanced welfare benefits. The union also called for efforts to address teachers’ workload, particularly by reducing non-core administrative duties so that educators can focus on their primary mission of fostering students’ holistic development./.
