Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand's parliament will hold a session on March 19 to vote on a new prime minister, Speaker of the House of Representatives Sophon Zaram said on March 16.
The announcement followed a royal endorsement of Sophon as the new House speaker, setting the stage for the lower house of parliament to convene for the election of the prime minister after the February general election.
Sophon, who also serves as President of Thailand’s National Assembly, pledged to rebuild trust in the lower house and transform it into a credible institution that can inspire public confidence. He underscored the need for changes in both mindset and working methods, with a stronger focus on action and results.
He also affirmed his commitment to working closely with the two deputy speakers, regardless of political affiliation, to set an example of effective leadership.
Thailand’s general election, held on February 8, saw the Bhumjaithai Party, led by caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, emerge as the largest party with 192 seats. It was followed by the People’s Party with 120 seats and the Pheu Thai Party with 74.
With around 292 seats secured through coalition partners in the 500-member House, Bhumjaithai is in a strong position to form a government. Its candidate, Anutin Charnvirakul, is widely expected to win the upcoming parliamentary vote and become Thailand’s next prime minister./.
