Seoul (VNA) - Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families in the Republic of Korea (RoK)'s South Gyeongsang province will receive support to visit Vietnam during the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival under a programme launched on August 22.
The programme is funded by the RoK's STX Welfare Foundation and the Community Chest of Korea, and implemented by the South Gyeongsang Family Centre.
This year, 16 Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families, comprising 49 members, were selected from nominations made by 13 family centres across the province. The families will visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from September 18-29, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Consul General in Busan Doan Phuong Lan highlighted the significance of the programme in enabling the families to return to Vietnam together, thereby strengthening family bonds and helping younger generations better understand their Vietnamese roots.
She noted that both Vietnam and the RoK attach importance to family and filial piety, shared values that provide a foundation for multicultural families to foster greater cohesion and mutual understanding between the two cultures.
For Korean family members, the trip offers an opportunity to learn more about their spouses’ homeland, families and culture, while children will have the chance to connect directly with part of their heritage through first-hand experiences.
The diplomat affirmed that the Vietnamese Consulate General in Busan considers the Vietnamese community in southeastern RoK an integral part of the homeland and stands ready to support the community, particularly Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families.
By the end of 2025, the programme, launched in 2007, had supported 398 families, involving 1,420 people from multicultural families, to visit their homelands in more than 10 countries. Vietnam accounted for the largest number, with 137 families and 475 people making return visits during 2012-2025.
The programme aims to help migrant spouses adapt to a new culture through a two-way approach, strengthen mutual understanding between husbands and wives, and help children in multicultural families develop stronger ties with both cultures.
As part of the programme, Lan and Director of the South Gyeongsang Family Centre Seung Hae Gyeong also discussed plans to cooperate in supporting Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families, with a focus on helping Vietnamese women integrate into society and build stable lives, while enabling younger generations to better understand and maintain ties with Vietnamese culture./.
