Dong Thap aims to cut down poverty ratio by 0.5 percent in 2021

The Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap is striving to reduce the ratio of poor households by 0.5 percent in the end of 2021, according to a plan released by the provincial People’s Committee on the implementation of the National Target Programme on sustainable poverty reduction and social welfare.

Dong Thap (VNA) – The MekongDelta province of Dong Thap is striving to reduce the ratio of poor householdsby 0.5 percent in the end of 2021, according to a plan released by theprovincial People’s Committee on the implementation of the National TargetProgramme on sustainable poverty reduction and social welfare.

In recent years, Dong Thap has seen a dramaticdrop in the ratio to 1.86 percent in 2020 from 2.73 percent in 2019.

Various support policies have been applied,including providing credit for poor and near-poor households as well as thosejust escaped from poverty, and poor students. Last year, more than 443 billionVND was provided to more than 13,000 households.

Meanwhile, more than 124,800 healthinsurance cards have been handed over to poor locals, while more than 26,000students have received learning support, and nearly 1,400 houses have beenbuilt for poor households.

As part of efforts to implement Resolution42/NQ-CP issued by the Prime Minister dated April 9, 2020 on measures to assistCOVID-19-impacted people, Dong Thap has provided more than 180 billion VND tomore than 183,400 needy people to help them ease difficulties and stablisetheir life.

At the same time, the provincial VietnamFatherland Front (VFF) Committee and member orgaisations have mobilised morethan 300 billion VND from the society and over 84 scholarships worth 51 billionVND for the poor.

Doan Tan Buu, Vice Chairman of the DongThap People’s Committee said that in order to complete the target of reducingthe poverty ratio by 0.5 percent by the end of this year, the province willfocus on associating the implementation of sustainable poverty reduction withthe building of new-style rural areas.

Along with providing favourable conditionsfor locals, especially those in rural areas to access basic social welfare, thelocality will conduct vocational training to rural labourers and increaselabour export, he said./.

Over 513,000 people supported in disaster response in 2025

Throughout 2025, the Vietnam Red Cross Society maintained its frontline role, rolling out proactive response plans, expanding training and drills, and strengthening public awareness. Forecast-based early action initiatives were implemented in central provinces and major urban centres, contributing to reduced losses, alongside improved coordination in risk monitoring and early warning systems.

Overseas scholar honoured for contributions to national development, Vietnam - Australia ties

The Certificate of Merit recognises Lien’s leadership in 10 Australia-funded projects implemented at Curtin University since 2022, focusing on key areas including energy transition, carbon market development, digital transformation and policy building. Notably, a capacity-building programme for around 200 Vietnamese officials and leaders has helped enhance human resources and promote practical cooperation between the two countries.
