Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce is working closely with rice exporters to boost shipments to 7 million tonnes this year, with Africa, Latin America and Asia identified as key growth markets.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun said the ministry has held discussions with the Thai Rice Exporters Association to review developments in rice trade and market conditions, and explore measures to further promote rice exports.
Stressing that exports remain a key mechanism for generating purchase orders to absorb rice output and support income for Thai farmers, she said she has instructed the Department of Foreign Trade and the Department of International Trade Promotion to coordinate with commercial attaches worldwide to promote Thai rice in high-potential markets.
The ministry will work proactively with the private sector to expand trade opportunities in major global markets.
She added that relevant agencies have been instructed to implement long-term measures aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of Thai rice. These measures include developing rice varieties that meet evolving global market demand, expanding into new export markets, and managing risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which could affect rice production in the years ahead.
The ministry will also work closely with relevant agencies to enhance support measures for farmers and strengthen the country’s rice production security./.
