Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar authorities have permanently deactivated 143,409 phone SIM cards suspected of being connected to online gambling activities, officials said on June 22.
The SIM cards were permanently disabled between March 2025 and May 2026 after authorities found they had been used to distribute large volumes of identical messages promoting online gambling.
Local authorities suspended 1,120 SIM cards used to operate illegal financial accounts linked to gambling activities, while permanently shutting down more than 1,000 e-wallet accounts associated with online gambling networks.
In addition, between January 2025 and April 2026, Myanmar authorities blocked access to 102 gambling websites and applications through IP address restrictions. Beyond technical measures, legal action has also been taken against actors, social media influencers (KOLs), and other individuals involved in promoting online gambling activities./.

A Myanmar bill proposes the death penalty as the highest punishment for individuals who illegally abduct, abuse, torture or detain others to coerce them into committing online fraud. It also proposes a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for individuals directly operating scam centres or engaging in fraud involving digital currencies.
