Hanoi (VNA) – The Supreme People’s Procuracy has announced that its investigative agency has issued an indictment against Pham Tan Hoang, former Deputy Chief Justice of the High People’s Court in Da Nang (now the Appellate Court of the Supreme People’s Court in the city), on charges of “taking bribes” under Clause 2, Article 354 of the Penal Code.
On July 17, Hoang turned himself in to the investigative agency and admitted to receiving a bribe of 140 million VND (5,355 USD) to influence a second-instance trial in favour of Tran Hoang Dan, who was convicted of murder. The intervention reportedly led to a sentence reduction of 1.5 years. The former deputy chief justice also voluntarily returned the illicit money.
In addition to this case, the investigative body determined that Hoang also accepted bribes in a cassation trial to benefit one party in a civil dispute over a deposit contract in Quang Tri province.
The man is the 27th person to be prosecuted in connection with the expanding corruption case involving acts of bribery, bribery brokering, and bribery acceptance at the High People’s Court (now Appellate Court) in Da Nang. The case is under close supervision by the Central Steering Committee Prevention and Control of Corruption, Wastefulness, and Negative Phenomena.
Previously, the investigative agency prosecuted Pham Viet Cuong, another former Deputy Chief Justice of the same court, for bribery, alongside 25 other individuals, including judges, prosecutors, enforcement officers, clerks, and lawyers, on various bribery-related charges./.
