Indonesia boosts nuclear cooperation with Russia

Indonesia stands ready to work with Russia and all ASEAN member states to ensure the partnership contributes to stronger resilience, prosperity, and long-term regional stability.

Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia has called for stronger cooperation with Russia in nuclear energy technology at the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit marking 35 years of relations, held on June 18 in Kazan, Russia.

The Indonesian government said closer collaboration in nuclear technology is part of its strategy to achieve national energy self-sufficiency within the next three years.

It stressed that the exploration of safe energy technologies, including nuclear power, must be accompanied by technology transfer, workforce training, and compliance with the highest international safety standards.

The Southeast Asian nation is currently in negotiations with Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom on a project to develop a floating nuclear power plants. This technology is seen as a more suitable and efficient solution than land-based plants.

Alongside nuclear development plans, Indonesia also continues to advance its strategy to import 150 million barrels of crude oil from Russia by the end of 2026. The move is aimed at strengthening national energy reserves amid risks of global supply chain disruptions driven by geopolitical instability, including recent tensions involving the US and Iran.

At the regional level, Indonesia is urging a deeper ASEAN–Russia strategic partnership. As one of the world’s major suppliers of energy, wheat, and fertilisers, Russia is viewed as a key partner in stabilising global supply chains.

Regarding multilateral cooperation prospects, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said Indonesia stands ready to work with Russia and all ASEAN member states to ensure the partnership contributes to stronger resilience, prosperity, and long-term regional stability./.
