Quang Tri (VNA) – The Coast Guard Region 2 Command, in coordination with the Quang Tri provincial Party Committee’s Board for Information, Education, and Mass Mobilisation, held a conference on August 15 to provide updates on the country’s sea and islands and to promote the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
More than 100 local fishermen, fishing boat owners, and seafood traders from Cua Tung commune attended the event, which provided information on the Law of the Sea of Vietnam, the Fisheries Law, and relevant directives, resolutions, and regulations issued by the Government, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defence on IUU fishing prevention and sustainable offshore operations.
Authorities also briefed participants on Vietnam’s maritime zones, traditional fishing grounds, prohibited fishing areas, and essential safety measures at sea. They explained the strict penalties imposed by Vietnamese and foreign laws for IUU violations and gave guidance on installing and operating vessel monitoring systems (VMS) and ensuring transparent reporting as required.
The event formed part of a peak emulation campaign against IUU fishing being implemented across central provinces and cities.
On this occasion, the Coast Guard Region 2 Command presented 50 gift packages, each worth 1 million VND (about 38 USD), to policy beneficiary families and disadvantaged fishermen in Cua Tung commune, encouraging them to confidently go offshore, protect national sovereignty, and develop their livelihoods.
Quang Tri province is home to thousands of fishing vessels. In recent years, the locality has worked closely with relevant forces to roll out comprehensive measures for inspection, supervision, law enforcement, and public awareness-raising to combat IUU fishing. It has strictly monitored fishing activities through the VMS, promptly preventing violations in all waters, especially foreign waters.
In the first seven months of 2025, the provincial Fisheries Sub-Department and Fisheries Surveillance Force, in coordination with competent agencies, conducted 20 patrols and inspections on nearly 200 fishing vessels, imposing administrative penalties on 46 boat owners, with total fines exceeding 1.5 billion VND./.
