Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) and Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) on June 30 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on nuclear regulatory cooperation, focusing on radiation protection, nuclear safety, security and safeguards.
The agreement was signed in Jakarta by NEA Interim Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Koh and Acting Chairman of Bapeten Zainal Arifin.
Under the MoU, the two sides will cooperate through joint training programmes, personnel exchanges, scientific research and technical meetings aimed at strengthening regulatory and oversight capacity in the nuclear sector.
Koh said the agreement builds on the long-standing bilateral cooperation between the two countries and will contribute to enhancing nuclear safety, regulatory oversight and emergency preparedness. He noted that the cooperation comes as Singapore is studying the potential role of nuclear energy in its future energy mix.
According to the NEA chief, the agreement also reflects Singapore’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Southeast Asian countries to foster trust, strengthen coordination and improve regional preparedness for radiological incidents.
For his part, Arifin said the cooperation between the two agencies goes beyond technical exchanges and is intended to develop into a long-term strategic partnership that contributes to strengthening nuclear safety and security in the region.
He expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to expand, particularly in enhancing regulatory capacity, strengthening safety and security oversight, and jointly addressing emerging challenges related to nuclear and radiation applications./.
